Fish and Chips in London-town - this is cod flavored variety photoed here

I guess you gotta try the staples of a particular region when you find yourself there. So bring on the fish and chips! After visiting Westminster Abbey, we were all a bit famished and looking for some eats. We came across Subway but what’s the point? You can get that in plain old Columbus. As a matter of fact, there were quite a few Subway sandwich shops in London. After some searching, we found “The Laughing Halibut.”

Not all beer is served warm in jolly old England - here’s proof

One thing I had to do while visiting London was sample the Guinness and after almost a week and a half there, I still hadn’t tasty the creamy goodness that is Guinness. I made this clear to my brother-in-law, and he responded that perhaps I would get a chance to sample the Guinness on the next visit to London. Oh ye of little faith.

Well on me last night, I made it out to O’Neil’s Pub (O’Neil’s pub, 326 Earl’s Court Rd, Kensington, SW5 9BQ. Nearest tube: Earls Court (come out and turn right)) which was just a few blocks from where I was staying. I had visited another pub called Blackbird just down the street but opted for a bottle of 1845 at the time. Silly me!

Tuna Roll at the Cornerstone

I just got back from the mob scene at the Cornerstone Deli. I don’t know if I can attribute it to the addition of Sushi to the menu, but the place has been packed as of late. I haven’t tried the sushi but a friend did and enjoyed it. I saw several customers opting for the sushi items and it sure looked good. I’ll have to give it a shot and see for myself.

Caprese Salad at Cardone’s

After all the hype in the Columbus Dishrag, err, uhh, I mean Dispatch, I had to head on over to Cardone’s at 377 W. Main St. in Westerville, Ohio. Apparently, many other customers were there as a result of the Dispatch review as well. It looks like Jared R from Nothing Better to Do beat me to Cardone’s. I got scooped! He must have read the Dispatch review as well. Why go Italian and eat vegetarian? That seem like a conflict of interest to me, Jared. It’s like going to a bar and drinking O’Doul’s. Relax man, it’s all in good fun.

Hey, even the Dishrag took its sweet time in getting this story. Cardone’s has been open since February. By the way, did I mention that finerepast.com is so famous that it was the subject of a bandwidth attack today? I’ve blocked (probably only temporarily) the perpetrators. They were trying to take finerepast.com down but they didn’t know who they were messin’ with. Probably some punks from Smith & Wollensky’s or Buca di Crappo or Bag O’Nails (btw, bring a sandwich).

The Ohio Investigative Unit is investigating Easton’s Smith & Wollensky for allegedly serving watered down booze to its customers. Hopefully a customer reported them; otherwise, it doesn’t bode well for Smith & Wollensky’s clientele (willing to pay for overpriced booze but can’t tell the difference anyways).

Smith & Wollensky did the brilliant thing and fired seven employees for “violating company policies.” Exactly where in its employee handbook does it say - “Thou shalt not water down booze.” Wonder how many of the fired bartenders are willing to testify against Smith & Wollensky?

Maybe an investigation should be opened into their $15.50 omelette. How do they get away with that?

Taj Platter at Taj Mahal Restaurant in Columbus

When in doubt, I head to the Taj Mahal. It’s close by and it’s good food. This time I tried the Taj Platter off of their menu - consisting of Tandoori Chicken, choice of Lamb or Chicken Curry, Raita, Naan and choice of Dessert. I, of course, went with the Lamb Curry. After the first wave of Naan had disappeared, I ordered up a special order of Peshawari Naan (Stuffed with cashews and raisins, baked in a clay oven). Who knew that bread could be so good and tasty! For dessert, as if the Peshaware Naan were not enough, I chose the old reliable - Kheer (Home-made long grain rice pudding with milk, raisins and pistachio).

Continuing my “That’s Italian” week, I headed over to Luce Cafe in Sweet Home, Powell, Ohio. Luce Cafe is on the Northeast corner of Seldom Seen Road and Sawmill Parkway. Luce is a shoot-off of La Scala, and I’ve always been fond of La Scala (the scale). While I’m translating Italian, Lucé just means “light” in Italian. According to Lucé’s website (ok, now I’ll use the accent), light has inspired Italians over time, and it apparently inspired the owners of Lucé just like the scale inspired the owners of La Scala. Actually, La Scala is a famous opera house in Milan, Italy.
