Risotto at Trattoria La Tavola, no longer in powell

FineRepast, et al., made a run out to Trattoria La Tavola, no longer in Powell, but in Dublin or maybe Columbus or somewhere off of Riverside Drive. It was a fairly popular place this recent Friday night as there were few tables available. It seems that La Tavola no longer has valet parking which is generally fine with me but some lady, who was running late, stopped right in front of the entrance to let her husband run in and get in line for a table. I generally have no problem with this but it left me partially hanging out on Riverside Drive for oncoming traffic to target. Pull up a little more, maybe, perhaps, thank you.

Of course, the tomfoolery didn’t end there. If you are familiar with La Tavola’s parking lot, it heads back into a loop. Our fair driver gets to the loop and can’t decide whether to go left or right. Well, at this point, I’m going whichever way she is not. She heads right and so I go off to the left. She changes her mind and tries to go left as I’m passing and nearly broadsides me in the parking lot. I’m glared at by the lady and her son as they get out of the car as if her indecision and inattentiveness were somehow my fault. Didn’t realize you owned the lot. I generally recommend to people to pull their head out of their ass prior to driving the car. It really helps with peripheral vision. Perhaps mandatory valet parking would help here.

Anyway, nothing a little vino (as well as a later rant session on the blog) couldn’t cure. My favorite vino at La Tavola is the Barbera, Boroli ‘Quattro Fratelli’. We tried the Barbera, Damilano this time upon the server’s recommendation. We enjoyed it so much that it merited a second bottle. La Tavola still has their summer menu up and it appears the Barbera, Damilano was $6 cheaper back then. Alas, nothing like websites that never get updated. Hey, why even have one? I guess customers can comparison shop at the same restaurant over time.

Pictured above is the Risotto special. I merely had a bite and found the risotto cooked perfectly to an al dente setting. I’ll see if I can obtain detailed comments from the specific diner and add those later. My only complaint was that it was a bit salty. Hey, but we’re eating out in Columbus where sea brine is the flavor of the day. Of course, I exaggerate but this dish was a little salty.

Another dining guest tried the Sausage Pappardelle – La Tavola’s homemade Ohio pork sausage over wide pasta with marinara, onion, and spicy peppers. I thought this was very well done. The marinara sauce was spot on. The pappardelle was perfect. I failed to try the Ohio pork sausage but will delve into specific diner comments as well.

Liver and onions at La Tavola

Liver and onions at La Tavola

Here’s the liver and onions. Many of you will turn up your noses to such a dish but La Tavola is still doing it right as you may have already read. This ain’t the liver and onions that your mom used to make. La Tavola’s is tender and tasty and isn’t overwhelming to the palate. Even my friends who hate liver and onions had to agree that this was the best they had tasted.

Finally, I leave you with a shot of the Flank Steak at La Tavola. I didn’t try any of this myself but it sure looked good. I will solicit comments from the diner in question.
