Since my grocery category appears to be one of the most visited categories on this site,
I thought I’d write about my Costco experience for the viewing public. I used to
find myself at Kroger or, as I affectionately referred to it, the K-robber, just because
it was convenient. I live between two of them - one at High and North Broadway and the
other at Graceland shopping center. Despite knowing that Kroger was one of the highest
priced grocery stores in town, I continued to go there. “Hey, you pay for
convenience,” is how I would rationalize it.
Giant Eagle seemed to be a little bit better on price but was another mile or so away.
For awhile I did start going to Meijer. Meijer had much better prices on many of the
things I would buy. For example, Meijer beat Kroger hands down on half and half,
Classico Spaghetti sauce, Bolthouse Farms juices, toilet paper, paper towels, peanut
butter, and the list goes on and on. And you didn’t need one of those stupid
cards. The Kroger card usually just got you down into the ballpark of what the price
should really be. Eventually, the drive to Meijer became too long and I needed an
alternative.
After receiving further confirmation of the brilliance of my wife’s family (who all had DVR’s with the built in 30 second fast forward and who belonged to Costco), I bought a couple DVRs and a Costco membership. TV watching and grocery shopping have never been the same. In fact, they’ve been revolutionized.I bought the basic $50 membership to Costco and saved more than that on my first trip there. My wife almost paid for the membership herself with the savings on some Shisheido revitalizing cream (or something like that) - normally $80-100 at department stores but only $53 at Costco.Still not convinced - then here comes the K-robber beatdown. Like the plastickey taste of bottled water - you can buy 35 bottles for the price of 24 at Kroger. Are you a Brita woman? 10 Brita filters for $42. Want to go compact fluorescent? How about 10 compact mini-fluorescents for $14? Have cats? 36 pack of Fancy Feast for under $16. Where are we at the K-Robber? A buck a can or so? You a half and halfer with your java? Half gallon of half and half for $3.54. What’s Kroger - like a $1.99 a pint? The list goes on and on and on. | I sold out to Giada but not to K-robber, you can too |
Is the Costco convenient. For me it is. Just jump on 71 and cruise north for about 8 minutes. I still go to Kroger for 5/3 though but that’s about it.
