Back at the Maca Cafe – a tapas cafe. Of all the posts on this site, the one I wrote on the Maca Cafe several months ago is still ringing in the most visitors. So I was long overdue for a return visit to the back of what used to be Clara’s store in Sweet Home Powell, Ohio. Take me back!

Karl Wohlwend providing nonstop entertainment and good times at the Maca Cafe

FineRepast, et al., happened upon Columbus’ finest classical guitarist, Karl “The Truth” Wohlwend, regaling the throngs with the works of Albeniz, Villa Lobos, Tarrega, Sor, and others. Karl is available for hire at your fine establishment – just follow the links.

At the Maca Cafe you get the best of both worlds, fine entertainment and fine dining. So let’s get started, shall we?

Maca Cafe’s Creamy Tri-Mushroom with port and sherry

This soup came highly recommended to us and managed to live up to all the hype, although Norman gave us an awfully attractive description of the unattainable (at least on this night) chick pea soup. I’ll have to return for that later. The Creamy Tri-Mushroom soup was more than an adequate proxy and we reached the bottom of the bowl in no time.

Tortilla Espanola – thick potato and onion omelet with artichoke (on this day)

I could eat this for breakfast everyday. I need more omelets with potatoes. This was a fine combination and the ingredient of the day was artichoke. The artichoke gave the dish a nice little je ne sais quoi – it was sort of the hidden Easter egg and made a nice surprise to the palate.

Stuffed Pequillo Peppers

These are roasted mild peppers stuffed with herb goat cheese. Coincidentally, these were a nice follow up to the Tortilla Espanola. Cheese, potato and onions – how can you go wrong? But the real treat of the night was the Shrimp in Olive Oil with Garlic. See my previous post on the Maca Cafe. If it’s possible, these tasty treats have only gotten better with time. The Maca may have the best shrimp in Columbus. I can’t find good shrimp anywhere else. The olive oil, garlic and butter will keep you coming back with more and more bread. I should’ve gotten another pic.

Chocolate Ganache with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt

Ok, I’ve renamed this the “Simply Sinful Transgression Trifecta.” How else do you describe chocolate, salt and olive oil? Where else can you get this anyways? Outrageous! So wrong it’s right. There’s a reason they give you such a small portion. Anymore and you’ll have to head straight to confession – “Forgive me Father for I have sinned and sinned and sinned again.”

Crema Catalana

Creme Brulee with a hint of lemony goodness. Lovely! There’s a little surprise in every dish at the Maca Cafe.

Check it out.
