If you like the old world feel and crave a nice big, toasted and juicy deli sandwich, Katzinger’s is a great place to go. The sandwiches are ample and very tasty. They offer pickle barrels from which you can pick out your pickles while waiting for your sandwich. They have a nice atmosphere. It feels like the place has been there for decades (and it probably has). They mention celebrities that have visited (like Bill Clinton). They seem to get their staff from the college of art, and usually have some colorful, interesting people behind the counter. The menu is huge and diverse, and can be a bit overwhelming for a first-timer. They can make a custom sandwich for you any way you want. They have a mini-bakery and a tiny eclectic store. They have an array of delicious side-dishes and desserts. They have tables outside if you want eat outside. The parking is along 3rd st. and I can usually park within a block.

I was addicted to Maxie’s Deli back in the 80′s and tried Katzinger’s several times, and loved their sandwiches, but Maxie’s was always couple of bucks less, and I kept going to Maxie’s. When Maxie’s closed, I thought I would frequent Katzinger’s, but the prices kept me from being a regular.

I still go to Katzinger’s a couple of times a year, and I’m glad they are still in business after all these years, but every time I go I think “man, that was a lot of money for a sandwich.”

All in all, the sandwiches are great, and I crave them every once in a while, but the prices are just a bit too high. If you haven’t tried Katzinger’s Deli you definitely should. I’d have to put it on the German Village “must see” list, along with Schmidt’s and the Thurman Cafe (for the Thurman Burger).
