Finerepast, et al., took a trip to Lindey’s in German Village for a little late night soirée (I guess that’s redundant). It was actually a double birthday celebration. Lindey’s is my wife’s favorite restaurant in Columbus. Would it soon become mine as well?
Things got off to a great start as another couple that had joined us had been promised a free bottle of wine on their next visit to Lindey’s. Lindey’s had ostensibly overcharged them for some wine the last time(s) they were there and to make up for it Lindey’s staff gave them this freebie. I suggested the Frog’s Leap cabernet or a wine called, “Rocket Science.” I suggested the latter simply on the name alone. Others were equally intrigued so we went with Rocket Science. Let me tell you, it was the best bottle of wine that I’ve had in a long while - complex, not too sweet, and robust. Lindey’s had it somewhat moderately priced at $59 a bottle. It could be that free wine always tastes better as well but we did order a second bottle which seemed even better than the first. Of course, I’ll find this at some wine shop and it won’t taste nearly the same. The same thing happened to us at Figlio’s. We found a tasty Shiraz - Hill of Content. Bought a case of it later because we’d liked it so much and it never tasted the same as at Figlio’s. Alas!
Before and during the first bottle of Rocket Science I had plenty of time to peruse Lindey’s menu. I did note that their most expensive dish was the $36 14 ounce bone-in filet. I duly remarked that it was only one dollar more than my veal osso buco special at Giuseppe’s. It’s always comforting to know that I could’ve had the top dish at Lindey’s for just a few pennies more.
My wife has a nice rule that a restaurant usually does one or two dishes really well. At Lindey’s, it was the Tournedoes of Beef and the Rack of Lamb. But their Rack of Lamb was gone and had been replaced by Double Cut Lamb Chops. I was in the mood for something lighter and went with the Linguine with Clams.
For starters, I ordered the house salad - “A classic champagne vinaigrette tossed with hearts of palm, tomato and roquefort cheese.” It was a great light start and the combination of hearts of palm and roquefort was outstanding.

Lindey’s Linguine with Clams
My linguine was an interesting combo of andouille sausage, clams and pasta. I wasn’t expecting so much sausage which may have been a bit overpowering but it was a tasty dish.

Lindey’s Tournedoes of Beef
| My wife shared her beef tournedoes with me and they were fabulous. I came across a term yesterday that I was unfamiliar with - “food porn.” One taste of the tournedoes and I quickly understood what that term meant. The beef was melt in your mouth good. Oh my gawd, Lindey’s does these very well. My wife was right on. If you go to Lindey’s, you can’t go wrong with the Tournedoes of Beef and the Rocket Science wine. More decadent desert followed with the Bananas Foster. Ridiculously decadent!
If you go valet your car. They give out tickets like crazy in that neighborhood. Lindey’s |

How sad my return to German Village Lindey’s when I discovered that they no longer featured the “Rack of Lamb”; in it’s place was “Lamb Chops” that were basically the shanks, and my experience with the latter has usually been less than stellar. So I settled for the Tournedos, another one of my favorites at Lindeys, but asked them to bring me the crispy leeks with it (which was a featured in both lamb dishes) in place of the potatoes. It was quite good, but the steaks were a little larger than I remember them, or perhaps because they seemed so because I have been having the same dish over at Hyde Park Grill which is done so exquisitely, that I now prefer theirs. Perhaps you can tell that I tend to zero in on one main dish with which I have a great experience, and then return to the restaurant for that particular plate. I love recalling the finest things I have had in Columbus: in the summer of 07, Barcelona carried an exquisite “espresso encrusted t-bone, as aforementioned, I love Hyde Park Grille’s Tournedos, K2U carried the best calamari which Barcelona rivals (and K2U has been replaced by Wine Tapas bar), Miranova has a great lobster appetizer and unbelievable cheese course, and sometime ago, Handke’s featured the most amazing caesar salad in an asiago cheese basket and salmon tartar, also both appetizers. But German Village Lindey’s still possesses one of the finest ambiences in Columbus, so much so that I never regretted one moment in planning my wedding rehearsal dinner there. The sister restaurant at Polaris, which was open briefly, was no match for the artwork, elegance, and overall atmosphere of the Lindey’s in German Village.
