| Valentine’s Day found us at the Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse which is apparently slightly different than the Hyde Park Grille on Old Henderson Road. The Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse is located off of High Street in the Short North. As you can imagine, the place was packed even as early as 6:30 pm for Valentine’s Day. We made our reservation on January 2 for the occasion. They take reservation after January 1 for Valentine’s Day. It is a popular place.
We started off with some appetizers – the Shrimp Cocktail and oysters on the half shell. I’ve determined that all shrimp in Columbus tastes the same – kind of bland and a little crunchy. Can we get fresh shrimp in Columbus or is it just impossible. I had a similar experience at The Ocean Club with the Colossal Shrimp Cocktail. |
The oysters on the half shell rocked. They were so good that we ordered another half dozen. They were fresh and scrumpdilli-icious. Nobody adds enough horseradish to the cocktail sauce for my particular taste but c’est la vie, n’est-ce pas?
The other couple with us ordered the wedge salad. I’m always amazed how something so simple could be so popular. Just goes to show that if you throw enough blue cheese dressing on it, anything is good or at least palatable.
I went with the Beefsteak Tomato and Onion salad. They listed it on my bill as the Tomato Bleu Salad for $7.95. Wonder if I received the unwitting upgrade? I made a mistake ordering this as either tomatoes are out of season or I got some that were picked well before being ripe and were allowed to ripen on the ride over from California or wherever. Nothing like blanched tomatoes without much flavor.
Of course the only celebrity steaks I could stomach were the Nicklaus and Griffin steaks. Two OSU alumni whom I actually respect. Just kidding. I don’t care what they are called but the Nicklaus and the Griffin both have peppercorns or are au poivre which is how I like my steak. I ordered the Steak Griffin and had them keep the butter on the side so as to avoid the Ruth’s Chris drowning by butter. Hyde Park is still my favorite steakhouse as the Steak Griffin was worthy of a couple Heismans. If you go make your reservation well in advance as they are busy on almost all days.

Here’s my thoughts on New Taco Tao:
“I drove over here after reading about it on the web. It’s a really dirty truck with a really dirty table. Forget it. ”
On the other hand, Taquikin Taqueria y Loncheria Movil, which is actually on Morse Rd, I said:
“Went back tonight for a couple more taco pastors and an order of refried beans. And tried the roasted jalapenos. They weren’t as hot as I imagined. Also had an orange soda. Very good food. Highly recommended!”
