Cup O' Joe/Stauf's is okay - I'd take it over Caribou or Starbucks (neither of which deserve a mention in a local writeup). But it seems they just throw newly roasted coffee in with the older stuff. Nearly everyone I've asked acts a bit taken aback when I ask when a particular bean was roasted, and it never tastes/brews very fresh. I've had decent coffee from them, sure - but nothing splendid.

Better bets for local java:

Cafe Brioso (downtown @ High & Gay) roasts their own beans on-site and actually pairs their coffee drinks with different roasts, which highlights the flavor of the coffee and makes for a better drink (try the mocha). My only complaint is that - what with all the great beans they get - I wish they'd try doing something lighter than the Full City roast. Lighter roasts = more caffeine, more subtleties in flavor.

But the best coffee in the city, hands-down can be found at Yeah Me Too (in Clintonville, on Indianola). It's a tiny hole in the wall place and they don't serve fancy drinks. But the coffee is fantastic - great beans & a better range of roasts than Brioso, and the friendly folks that run it can tell you exactly when each bag was roasted (usually within 2-3 days). It's the freshest stuff you're going to get in this town, and you will be able to taste the difference. And you like, you can get a cup of French press for about a buck.

Listen.

I can't stress this enough. I know who has the best coffee, and you won't find any info online.

There is this dude, Yovan (I am probably spelling it wrongly), who has a smallll shop in Clintonville. It is just north of Weber on Indianola. He roasts his own beans, grinds 'em up, and all of his coffee is mad in a French press. The shop is called

Yeah, Me Too!

Bring a container. Though he has to-go cups, you DO NOT want paper ever touching this coffee.

I always have taken 1/2 n 1/2 in my coffee. You don't need it in this coffee. It is so flavorful and delicious. My God. I am not kidding on this one. It is the best coffee I have ever had on Earth.

Plus, he is the kind of guy who seems very reflective and introspective. You get more than coffee when you get coffee at Yeah, Me Too!

Go there now.

My father-in-law loves McDonald's coffee, especially for the senior pricing. Just kidding. I'm more of a Diet Coke/Pepsi aficionado.
